PSS Bendigo Welcomes Special New Swimmers

21 September 2010

37 young Refugees originally from Burma-Thai refugee camps joined the Paul Sadler Swimming program in Term 3. The children who are now located in the Bendigo region had their first swim Sat Aug 15th at Paul Sadler Swimland Bendigo.

Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Service Manager Noemi Cummings said the children of the newly arrived community were keen to start the Paul Sadler Swimland Program. She said the idea for the program was born when it was realized that many refugees living here would love to swim but did not know how.

" Last summer, many parents told us that their children wanted to go to the pool because it was hot in Bendigo, however they were very frightened in taking them as nobody in the family could swim"

Noemi said Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Services chose Paul Sadler Swimland Bendigo for a number of reasons. " I've been impressed by the professionalism and caring nature of the staff."

Due to the flexible nature of the Paul Sadler Swimland program the Refugee children can go through their certificate levels without changing times, this is an important feature as many of them don't have transport and travel together on a community bus.

"Paul Sadler Swimland Bendigo are delighted to be able to provide this opportunity to these children, all the staff are having a ball working with them and they progressing nicely" said Marketing Coordinator David Meade.

"We will be working Closely with Multicultural Services to increase the program for them in the future" he adds.
