It is with concern that we note the number of drowning accidents in both our State of Victoria and more broadly throughout Australia. We also note that many of these accidents occurred in rips in the open ocean. Another point of concern is that some of the drownings were adults trying to save their children.
Given this statistical information, we feel that the swim school you choose must embrace a substantial "skill for life" philosophy as part of defining and answering the question of when is a child "swimming literate?"
As parents, we want to acknowledge and congratulate you for having your child taught to swim and survive. We would also like you to consider the possibility of a joint commitment with your child to obtain his or her Swordy 1km medal.
It is our belief that, at Paul Sadler Swimland, if a child or adult can swim one kilometre non-stop in the protected environment of a pool, they have obtained a skill base that will give them a chance to survive a rip. This affirmatively answers the question of when is a child "swimming literate?" and they will have gained a "skill for life", which will prepare them for all aquatic recreational options.
Parents, thank you for supporting the Swimland program. Please consider the content of our letter so, jointly, we can give your child the best possible chance of avoiding a drowning.
Yours faithfully,
Paul Sadler Founder of Paul Sadler Swimland
