Why we created this program

When the latest Royal Life Saving Australia National Drowning Report 2025 revealed a 27% increase in drowning deaths over the 10-year average, we knew we had to take action.

Behind those numbers are real people — families, friends, and preventable tragedies. The report highlighted that:

  • Adults and teens are now among the most at-risk groups.

  • Men aged 45 and over account for nearly one-third of all drownings.

  • Regional and remote communities experience drowning rates up to three times higher than major cities.

  • 43% of drowning deaths occurred in coastal locations, and 34% in inland waterways.

That’s why we’ve launched a dedicated 5-Week Swim & Survival Program, designed specifically for adults and teenagers to build essential survival skills and confidence before summer — the most at-risk season of the year.

About the 5-Week Program

Our new Water Safety & Survival Program is a short, focused course that teaches life-saving water survival skills in just five weeks.

You’ll learn how to stay calm, float, tread water, and respond confidently in real-life situations. Whether you’re a confident swimmer or haven’t been in the water for years, this program is for you.

Week-by-Week Overview

Week 1 — Water Familiarity & Confidence
Learn safe water entry techniques, breath control, and floating fundamentals to build calm and confidence.

Week 2 — Kicking & Deep Water Introduction
Develop body control, movement, and awareness while exploring deep-water environments safely.

Week 3 — Deep Water Survival
Practice treading water and survival techniques — including what to do if you unexpectedly fall into deep water.

Week 4 — Survival Backstroke & Rescues
Learn one of the easiest survival strokes and perform throw-rescue and distress-signal drills.

Week 5 — Real-Life Rescue Scenarios
Put everything together with hands-on survival and rescue practice — preparing you for real-world situations.

Paul Sadler Swimland is here to support adults at every swimming level. We offer beginner classes for those with little or no experience right through to intermediate or advanced swimming lessons.

Although we are ‘the survival specialists’ and focus on our goal of the zero drown toll, we can help adult swimmers with more than just developing water survival skills. If you’re already a fairly strong swimmer but you’re wanting to refine your technique or even train for an event, we can help!

From swimming lessons for adult beginners to refining your strokes and building your distances, our great team of swim teachers have up to 200 hours of training experience under their belts and are ready to help you reach your goals with their knowledge, passion, and care.

At Paul Sadler Swimland, we’re a recognised world leader in aquatic education so there’s truly no one better to trust whether you’re a complete beginner in the pool or an advanced swimmer looking to improve your technique.

Our learn to swim for adults program will help to equip adult swimmers with the skills they need to become safer and more confident and comfortable in the water. Each Paul Sadler Swimland swim teacher has an extensive amount of training and experience which they apply with passion into each lesson.

In an adult swimming class we work on basic swimming skills such as:

  • Breath control
  • Basic strokes
  • Stroke technique and stroke development
  • Floating on back
  • Blowing bubbles

However, in our swim programs we also focus on important water safety skills like:

  • Safety circle
  • Swimming without goggles
  • Deep water work
  • Mobility on front
  • Stroke correction
  • Mobility on back
  • Treading water
  • Safe exiting and entering of swimming pool
  • Open Water Swims

While our typical adult classes are taught in small groups, we also offer private swim lessons for adults.

If you need extra support while learning water safety skills and improving your swimming ability, our teachers can help with private lessons. By signing up to our private swimming lessons for adults you’ll get the personalised one-on-one teaching that you require to learn how to swim stress-free. In a private lesson, we can look closely at your basic swimming strokes or basic water safety skills, giving you the kickstart you need to find your water confidence and progress to the next level.
