Do you want to turn a passion for swimming and water safety into a flexible and fulfilling career? Whether you’re a strong swimmer or you just love working with kids and want to dip your toes into the aquatic industry, a career in swimming instruction offers flexibility, fulfilment and fun!
As a leading provider of swimming lessons to communities throughout Melbourne and surrounds, we’re proud to provide guidance to aspiring instructors on how to become a swim teacher in Victoria. Let’s dive in and answer some common questions to find out how to be a swim teacher!
What Qualifications Do I Need to Be a Swim Teacher?
To become a certified swim teacher, you’ll need to complete the relevant nationally recognised training from a registered training organisation. This will give you a foundation of knowledge required to teach swimming and water safety. We have qualified trainers on staff so you wont have to look too far for an accredited course.
At Paul Sadler Swimland we choose to use the Swim Australia Teacher (SAT) Certification. This course focuses on giving you the skills to instruct learners from 2.5 years old on swimming and water safety. Valid for three years from issue.
The course includes these units of competency:
- SISCAQU020 – Perform water rescues
- SISCAQU024 – Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy, and mobility skills
- SISCAQU025 – Teach water safety and survival skills
- SISCAQU023 – Plan swimming lessons
- SISCAQU026 – Teach swimming strokes
How Old Do You Have to Be to Become a Swim Teacher?
In Victoria, you typically need to be 15 to enrol in swimming and water safety training. However, you cannot independently teach until you are 16 years of age.
Other Entry Requirements and Steps
Before successful completion of your training courses, keep in mind these additional pre-requisites and general steps toward getting your aquatics career started.
Get a Working With Children Check (WWCC)
Because you’ll often be working with minors, maintaining clearance for working with children is a must when working as a water safety teacher and swim instructor in Victoria. Equivalent screening procedures apply in other states.
This checks for relevant offences that would prevent you from working with kids.
Note: Most training providers will require proof of your current WWCC before enrolment.
Complete First Aid and CPR Training
Proficiency in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is essential for swim teachers. Courses such as HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid and HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation are needed to meet the industry standard. Any reputable business within the aquatic industry will require their instructors to complete these courses, so if you’re thinking about how to become a swim teacher in Victoria or any other Australian state, getting your cardiopulmonary resuscitation qualification is a good starting point.
Gain Practical Experience
Most courses include a practical component, where you apply theoretical swimming and water safety knowledge in real-world settings under supervision. This helps the prospective water safety teacher build confidence and competence in delivering swimming lessons.
Apply for Positions
With your certifications and practical experience, it’s time to start job hunting! Possible employers include:
- Private swim schools
- Community centres
- Sporting and health clubs
- Schools and educational institutions
Why Choose a Career in Swimming and Water Safety?
A job as a swimming and water safety instructor is about more than just teaching skills and knowledge; it’s an opportunity to make a lasting impact on children and their families. Every lesson you teach helps kids build confidence in and around swimming pools, develop a vital life skill, and have fun!
It’s enjoyable for the teacher too. We asked our valued team members to tell us what they love most about working in water safety.
An Aquatic Environment Overflowing With Fun
Our team all agree, a big plus of being a swim teacher is the relationships you build with your students. Each class is filled with laughter, excitement, and those magic moments that make the job so special. Whether it’s the kids’ smiles, the funny nicknames they give you, or the enthusiastic “My turn!” before trying a new skill, when you teach swimming it can feel like you aren’t working at all!
Imparting Water Safety Skills to Make a Real Difference
Teaching kids to swim goes far beyond floating and kicking; it’s about giving them life-saving skills they’ll carry for life. Beyond putting your students on the path to mastering competitive strokes, you’re also teaching strategies they can use to stay safe in any body of water. From building basic confidence to real-world survival skills, every lesson nurtures trust, resilience and capability. And the best part? You’re making a real difference by helping kids feel strong, supported and ready for anything.
